Trás-os-Montes ("behind the mountains") is a predominantly rural area in the north-east of Portugal, bordering Spain. It is a very satisfying area to visit, with nature reserves, historic towns, and sleepy hamlets.

Castelo Branco is the capital of the Beira Baixa region, though it looks too small to be the capital of anywhere.

Parque Natural de Alvão
The Alvão National Park, near Vila Real, on the Serra of the same name, is beautiful but, be warned, can be cold, windy and rainy. A Portuguese-only site personal webpage with some interesting photos.

Parque Natural de Montesinho
Montesinho National Park, to the north of Bragança, is an unspoilt, sparsely inhabited area, with wild boar, eagles, and even wolves. A Let's Go page, with a text-only description.

Vila Real
The ancient, sleepy town of Vila Real is, incredibly, the commercial centre of Tras-os-Montes.
